The Air Jordan 9 was released in 1993. This was the year that Michael Jordan announced his retirement from the sport of NBA Basketball. The lead designer on the Air Jordan 9 was once again Tinker Hatfield.

The design of the Air Jordan 9 was inspired and influenced by Japanese design. A lot of detail of Japanese culture can be seen on the Jordan 9. The Air Jordan 9 design featured a rising sun on the back of the shoe with the Jumpman logo as the focal point. Located on the Jordan 9 shoe were different words from different languages that represented Michal Jordan. On the left of the shoe words Independence, Freedom, Sport, Athletic and Hope appeared. On right side of the shoe words like Intense, freedom, graceful, fore and dedicated appeared. The languages used for the words came from countries like Swahili, Russia, Germany, Italy, Spain, and France. The meaning behind the Air Jordan 9 was to represent Michael Jordan as a global superstar.

When the Air Jordan 9 was released it came in 4 colorways. The retail price for the Air Jordan 9 in stores was $125.

Air Jordan 9 Retro

The Air Jordan 9 retro was released in 2002. Four colorways and 2 styles of the Jordan 9 retro were released that year. The Jordan 9 retro released in a high-tops version and also in a low top version. The retail price for the Air Jordan 9 retro high-tops was $120 and $115 for the low-top version. In 2003 the Air Jordan 9 retro was released as a cleat.
